George Stainforth in Supermarine S6B 1596, on about Sept 12th, 1931. A few days after this picture was taken, 1596 cartwheeled on landing and plunged with George to the bottom of the Solent. He was lucky to escape alive, but on the 29th he went on to break the world speed record in the only other S6B that was ever built, numbered 1595. The latter may now be seen in the Science Museum in Kensington, while the original Rolls Royce 'R' engine is in the Rolls Royce Museum in the Silk Mill, Derby.
