Archie and Hope Stainforth gallery / Archie with first airmail service to Nigeria, 1936
Imperial Airways started a twice-weekly airmail service to Nigeria, via 'the East African route' from Khartoum to Maiduguri and thence to Lagos. Archie Stainforth, who supervised the construction of the landing strip at Maiduguri, is seen here standing with the local Emir in front of the airliner 'Delia' on its inaugural flight to Lagos in 1936.
