Archie and Hope Stainforth gallery / on Archie's raft, the 'Bovril' c.1934
The raft 'Bovril' (so named after the 1930's Bovril advertising slogan: 'Prevents that sinking feeling') on the Benue River near Numan. Designed by Archie, and constructed by 100 men of the village from local materials, it opened up a large area of bush to motor traffic for the first time. The Numan Resident's car is here making the first crossing with Archie directing operations.
