Stainforth early 20th century gallery
/ On a pleasure flight in 1922
The Stainforths went on a pleasure flight ('joy-ride') with the Berkshire Aviation Co. in 1922. Another photograph shows that all four of the Stainforth/Glovers who were living at Wimbledon at this time - George, Mary and Moxon, and Ethel Glover - went on the flight in this five-seater Avro 536. It is remarkable that George Stainforth senior, who had arranged the trip (costing 10/- for 10 minutes), managed to get into the right-hand front passenger seat despite wearing a steel corset because of his Pott's Disease. In the rear cockpit, being handed a cake, is Ethel Glover (who lived with the Stainforths as George's nurse). Behind her is Mary Stainforth (née Glover). The pilot is believed to be Fred Holmes, who ran the Berkshire Aviation Co. The venue is unknown, but it may have been the nearly opened Croydon Airport.
